Wisdom for Our Worship – 21st Edition
Proverbs 6: 6-11
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, 7Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, 8Provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. 9How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? 10A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep 11So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.
Certainly, there is a time for prayer. I'm not against prayer! Surely there is a time for playing and even a time for getting a little much needed rest and relaxation. However, what a sin and a shame it is to either pray, play or sleep when it is time to make the donuts! Even when it comes to trusting God and waiting on Him and getting ready for Him to do great and even miraculous things in our lives --- we sure better know our parts --- when it’s time to roll up ours sleeves and go to work! Standing still and watching God work is not always what pleases Him ---sometimes God wants us to join Him in the work and we need to know when! Remember there was a season when the children of Israel enjoyed manna that fell from heaven everyday but then there also came a season that once they had crossed over into the land of promise that they had to work the land in order to reap the benefits from the fruit of the land!
No doubt, God says that He will bless the work of our hands. Some of our only problem is that we haven’t given God much to bless. If He’s going to bless what’s in my hands then I want to make sure that I have something in my hands for Him to bless! Work is good! There is a profit in labor; not just financially but even inwardly deep down in our character. It is much better to teach one to fish than to simply give them fish. Giving fish is only temporary but when we teach others to fish it can last a life time and it can even be passed on to future generations. Even the ant, knows better than to think that we can do nothing and have everything! Even the ant understands the principles of sowing and reaping; seed time and harvest time. Please don’t allow yourself to be outsmarted by an ant! 9How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? 10A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep 11So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man. In every area of our lives; spiritually, financially, emotionally and economically we must get off the couch and get in the game. Then lastly, we must understand that the work that we do now in each of these areas will provide the very harvest [or lack thereof] that we will have to live on in the winter months ahead of us. This is wisdom for our worship.
