The timeless adages “our children are our future, education is an investment in the future and a mind is a terrible thing to waste” are significantly relevant today. We now have the No Child Left Behind Act, which in and of it is commendable but, unfortunately, is not enough. Many students in the inner city of Birmingham and surrounding communities remain at risk of failure due to socio-economic conditions and, in some instances, self-destructive behavior. The newspapers, television and radio give daily reminder that more effort and vigilance must be channeled to prevent and eradicate this rising epidemic. The Set Free Christian Outreach Center, Inc., is an organization established and dedicated to assist at-risk students by fighting the human consequences of poor education and economy while upholding the dignity of those affected by it.

The Set Free Christian Outreach Center, Inc., founded by Pastor James O. Kirk, was established February 1992 in Buffalo, New York. It began humbly as a weekly street ministry. Pastor Kirk was blessed with the donation of a building located at 142 Doat Street in Buffalo, which was initially used as a homeless shelter. Pastor Kirk and his staff gradually added Bible study, service to Foster Kids, counseling and food pantry. Since that time the program vision has grown. As of 1993 Set Free Christian Outreach Center provides a full range of services for troubled neighborhood children, runaway youth, dropouts, battered women, food pantry, sport and recreation, street ministry, outreach, crisis counseling, a kid’s Café, Health and Wellness, character building, and an after school program. Due to the need for expansion and a phenomenal success of the program, the Center moved to Birmingham, AL.

James O. Kirk Pastor/Teacher at Set Free Christian Outreach Center, Inc. He received his A.A.S. degree in Business Administration from Erie Community College City Campus in 1973. Pastor Kirk attended Buffalo State College from 1974 to 1975 receiving addition education in Business Management. Pastor Kirk attended the School of Tomorrow Program (A.C.E.) Accelerated Christian Education in Lewisville, Texas in 1999 where he received a contract to open and run a Christian School. This school was open in Buffalo, New York from 1999 to the fall of 2000. The school and the ministry will be operating in the Birmingham, Alabama area. He also received a grant from the YO! Buffalo Youth Program where he and his staff worked with At-Risk students ages 14-21. This program ran from September 2002 to September 2003. Many lives were touched and positive result was accomplished. Pastor Kirk started studying health and nutrition in 2000 after having an health problem that the doctors could not solved, he learned by taking health supplements and changes his eating lifestyle not only did he get well but also lost 20 pounds in the process. Pastor Kirk has dedicated his life to helping others do the same by teaching and conducting health seminars in the Birmingham area and in other cities as requested.
Goals:
1. To establish four Christian Schools and a Community Center in the Birmingham and the Bessemer area.
2. To build two homes for the homeless both male and female, 40 clients each.
3. Teach them how to become a business owner.
4. To teach them how to become a Christian and live a Christian life.
