I love the fact that Brown is family-oriented and there are so many professions in the church: doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, bankers, realtors and the list goes on. If you need any area of expertise we have it all at Brown we don't have to go looking for anything. I think it is such a great thing! I also love the fact that we don't just have a preacher at Brown we have a PASTOR!!! There is a difference. I never really knew the difference until I came to Brown. I was invited to Brown in 1995 by a non-member. She is COGIC and she knew I was Baptist and her beautician was a member and I asked her when I moved to area about Baptist churches and she told me about Brown. I never went anywhere else. Brown was the first church and the last church I visited and the rest is history.
In reference to Mrs. Mitchell's comment, I love the fact that everyone is valued at BMBC. The young and the old. On my first visit to Brown, I felt like so at home until I didn't want to visit any other church. The atmosphere at Brown Baptist is a feeling of welcomeness that you can't forget. Everyone there makes you feel like family. Our pastor, is such an awesome teacher! I love and appreciate his strategic methods for delivering the word through illustration and realization. I have been a member for over four years and I plan to raise my children under pastor Orr's as long as I live.
There are many things that I like about Brown. What comes to mind first is the Visual Sermons that we sometimes get. The first Sermon I heard at Brown was Are You Building Your House in which Pastor Orr used Lego Blocks as his visual. I thought even a child could understand his message. Not only was the Sermon Inspirational, the people at Brown were so friendly I felt right at home. Being somewhat of a shy person I did not stand up when they asked for vistors. At the end of service I walked around to shake Pastor Orr's hand and wouldn't you know he said "this is your first time here isn't it'? This blew me away, the fact he would even notice the visitors among the crowd. I rushed home to tell my husband that I think I found us a new church home. So here we are 18 years later like Katrena another page in history.
I think the people make the church. I first joined Brown because not only did Pastor Orr "bring it" but the people were so open and friendly. They asked my name invited me back and generally meant it. On my next visit those people remembered my name [we only had around 210 members then] asked me about myself and got me started in a ministry that I have flourished in ever since! Therefore I make it my business to do the same to everyone I meet. you know make the their transition smoother. I try to be real and down to earth with people and let them know that I am no better than they are.We all need each other and they are important in this church as well. These are my thoughts ....I'm out.
Amen Brother!!!!
September is my year anniversary at Brown Baptist. When I moved to Mississippi in April of 2007 from Maryland, I was determined to find a church in Mississippi that I was able to be spiritually fed and that would have ministries that would specifically meet the needs of my 11 and 5 year old. I found myself wondering what Pastor Orr was speaking about as I was visiting other churches. What I love is even though we have a congregation of over 4,000, Pastor Orr takes the time to personally contact the members on their birthday. I also love the fact that he is open to creating ministries that benefit the members. I also love the fact that you can take the sermons and relate them to your every day life. It is a big church with an even bigger heart!!!
I love the church... The members of the church are so friendly. They make you feel like the church is actually your second home. I enjoy the pastor who is not an old preacher but preaches like an old preacher. The values that the pastor teaches is so close to home. I love being apart of a church who values are like the values that I am brought up on and also the values that I am teaching my daughter. Most times when I am listening to a sermon, it feels like the pastor is talking directly about me which means that God is not through with me yet. God has been speaking with me about my ways and it is amazing that God talks with me at home, in my car, in the store, when I'm sleep, etc about a particular subject and just when I get to church, the pastor is speaking about the subject also. I love this church and I am so glad that a member stayed on me about visiting the church because as soon as I got there I knew I belonged....
Point blank - the best thing and most important thing is that Pastor Orr is teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ! I have grown leaps and bounds spiritually because of the teaching of Pastor Orr. I have never had a thirst for the word as I do since joining Brown. I don't understand how anyone can be within the walls of Brown and not want to be a part of the vision that is so clearly laid out before us. The people of Brown make it a wonderful place to be and the presence of God makes it the place to be. Pastor Orr sets the tone of accountability and he encourages all of us by not just talking it but walking it, too. I heard about Brown by way of Minister David Anderson. He preached the Revival at my old church and when I heard him I said, "whoever is teaching him is who I want to teach me!" As they say, the rest is history... God bless you, Brown!!
